Ba Na Hills in the Rain: What Is Still Worth Doing When the Golden Bridge Disappears
Every photograph you have seen of the Golden Bridge was taken on a clear day. Ours was not. The mountain makes its own weather, and there is a real chance you get the version we got.

We went up in January, on a morning when you could stand twenty metres from the Golden Bridge and see the outline of the hands and nothing else. Cloud sat on the mountain, the walkway was wet, and the view the whole place is famous for simply did not exist.
Nobody writes about that day. So here it is — because the mountain makes its own weather, and if you are going to Ba Na there is a real chance you get the version we got.
Why it happens so often
Ba Na sits high above Da Nang, and the cable car carries you up through whatever happens to be sitting on the mountain that morning. The city below can be in full sun while the summit is inside a cloud. It is not unusual, it is not bad luck, and it is not seasonal in a way you can plan around reliably.
The thing to understand before you book: the weather forecast for Da Nang is not the weather forecast for Ba Na. Those are two different places, and one of them is well over a kilometre above the other.
Our own day makes the point. On 24 January 2026 the summit was inside cloud from early morning until early afternoon. At 13:15 it cleared and the bridge appeared in full. By 14:35 we were back down beside the Han River in Da Nang under a blue sky with no cloud in it at all. Same day, one short drive apart.
What still works when you cannot see anything
More than you would think, because a surprising amount of Ba Na is indoors.
The Debay wine cellar
A tunnel cut into the rock by the French, now a wine cellar. Cool, dim, warmly lit, and completely unaffected by whatever is happening outside. It is also the most atmospheric thing on the mountain and the part most people hurry past on a clear day because they are rushing to the bridge.
On a foggy morning it is the best thing up there, and you will nearly have it to yourself.

The cable car itself
Rising through cloud is its own experience — the cabin lifts into white, the ground disappears, and now and then a tree or a pylon emerges beside you. It is genuinely eerie, in a good way. The stations are built like a French railway terminus and are worth ten minutes even in bad weather.
The French village and the indoor halls
The square itself is unpleasant in rain. But the buildings around it are open, and the domed hall with the glass roof is impressive precisely because you are looking up at cloud through glass instead of standing in it.
Lunch, properly
There is a large buffet restaurant up there. On a clear day it is an hour you could have spent outside. On a wet day it is the right call: sit down, take the hour, eat, and watch whether the cloud lifts. It sometimes does — ours did.
What does not work
- The Golden Bridge. You will walk it. You will not see what it looks like. The hands appear out of the fog at close range, which is atmospheric for about ninety seconds and after that is a wet bridge.
- The gardens and the viewpoints. They are views. There is no view.
- Photographs. Everything is flat white. If photographs are the reason you are going, do not go on a cloudy day.

How to avoid our morning
- Keep Ba Na flexible. Do not pin it to a fixed day of your itinerary. Decide the night before, or the morning of. This is the single most useful thing on this page.
- Go early. Cloud often builds through the day, and the first cable cars give you the best chance of a clear window.
- Look at a mountain forecast, not a city one. A general Da Nang forecast will not tell you what is sitting on the summit.
- Ask somebody who is there. Any hotel in Da Nang can look at the mountain out of a window. So can we.
- Give it two hours before you give up. Ours cleared at a quarter past one. Everybody who left at eleven missed it.

About the ticket
Ba Na uses a single combined ticket covering the cable car and the attractions at the top. The price has changed more than once, and the operator publishes it on their own site.
Any number we quoted could be out of date by the time you read it. Check the current price on Sun World’s own site before you go — and note that the ticket is not refundable because the weather was poor. That is the real cost of going up on a cloudy day.
Should you go at all?
If you have one day in Da Nang and that day is grey: no. Do the Marble Mountains and Hoi An instead, both of which hold up in cloud, and keep Ba Na for another trip.
If you have several days and can pick your morning: yes, and it is genuinely impressive when you can see. That is why our three-day plan puts Ba Na on the day that can move, and why the month you choose matters more here than anywhere else in central Vietnam.
And if you go up and it closes in on you anyway: head for the wine cellar, take lunch slowly, and give the cloud two hours to decide.
Common questions
Is Ba Na Hills worth it in bad weather?
Partly. The Debay wine cellar, the cable-car stations, the indoor halls and the buffet all work in cloud and rain. The Golden Bridge, the gardens and the viewpoints do not, because there is nothing to see from them.
Why is Ba Na Hills always foggy?
The summit is well over a kilometre above Da Nang and makes its own weather. The city can be in full sun while cloud sits on the mountain. A Da Nang forecast does not describe conditions at the top.
Can you see the Golden Bridge in the fog?
Only from a few metres away. The hands emerge out of the cloud at close range, which is striking for a minute or two, but the long view the bridge is famous for is not there.
What time should you go to Ba Na Hills?
As early as possible. Cloud often builds through the day, so the first cable cars give the best chance of a clear window. Our own cloud cleared at about a quarter past one, so it is also worth waiting rather than leaving at the first disappointment.
Is the Ba Na Hills ticket refundable if the weather is bad?
No. The combined ticket is not refunded because cloud spoiled the view, which is why it is worth keeping the day flexible rather than booking it in advance.
How much is the Ba Na Hills ticket?
Sun World publishes the current combined price on its own website, and it has changed more than once. We do not quote a figure here because any number we printed could be out of date by the time you read it.
Planning this trip yourself?
Ask us anything about the route, the pace or the timing. It goes straight to the office in Da Nang, not to a call centre — and if we are not the right company for your trip, we will tell you that too.
